My top 3 spots in Suomelinna for magical shots!

Finland is famous for its beautiful winter landscapes in Lapland with plenty of national parks to get lost with your camera, but if you want to pimp your Instagram profile you should not miss the island of Suomelinna with its fascinating mix of military architecture and breath-taking rocky coasts.
It is fairly easy to reach the island, just head to Kauppatori (Market Square) in front of the Senate and catch the boat that goes to the island every 30 minutes. Don't forget to buy the ticket (5€)!

Notice how all of the them point to west, which is where the sun goes down. Coincidence? No!
I suggest to get to the island at about sunset in order to get the best photos. You should know that the 60 minutes before/after sunset is when the light becomes soft, colourful and magical! Most of the jaw-dropping pictures that you like on instagram are taken at sunset for this reason! The sky burns in vivid red and orange colours while the shadows become cold and blue, making a perfect mix!
If you have a camera, try to bring a tripod to make some long exposures. If the sea is not frozen you can get some interesting effects where the waves looks like smoke, as it happened to me!
Set the camera at ISO 100, Shutter speed 5 or 10 seconds and adjust the aperture (F-stop) to make the picture darker or brighter. This should be an excellent starting point for your photos!
If you are with your smartphone, do not worry, it can take very good landscape shots as well! You just need to know how to use the camera of your smartphone. Check my article on how to improve your mobile photography skills!
